Medical weight loss solutions
I am often asked as a bariatrician ( medical weight loss specialist) “What solution do you have for my unwanted weight?”. My immediate response is that there are thousands of diets to help you lose weight and all of them work! However, there are very few weight management programs that change your life and offer you long term hope to keep the weight off permanently. Anyone can lose weight. Sadly more than two thirds of the American public regains the weight they lost and more! I strive to meet each patient where they are and offer a personalized solution for life long weight management. I have included several patient scenarios to illustrate how my weight management program is different from most other weight loss options .
Amy, 58 years old, could not lose weight. She tried everything and was on 10 medications from blood pressure pills to cholesterol medication. After a thorough history and physical, I found her thyroid to be low. We started a personalized eating plan, exercise regimen and appropriate thyroid replacement. She lost 20 pounds and discontinued 8 medications! She is still within 5 pounds of that goal weight 2 years later.
Bill, 67 years old, had significant swelling in his legs and a stressful job that caused his weight to escalate above 300 pounds. We adjusted Bob’s blood pressure medications to improve his fluid output and discontinued his beta blocker medication that contributed to his weight gain. Bill adjusted his lifestyle to reduce his work hours, and he now is able to walk in a swimming pool several times per week. His weight is down 25 pounds in 3 months and he continues to lose!
Debbie, 55 years old, gained 50 pounds at menopause. We discovered her morning blood sugars were borderline (105-110 mg/dl) and she had a strong family history of diabetes. Debbie started an insulin sensitizer medication, balanced deficit diet and mild appetite suppressant. She hates to exercise and never did add it to her weight loss program! She lost 60 pounds and maintains the loss 5 years later!
Mary Jo (35 years old) gained 20 pounds that would not get off, after her baby was born 15 months ago. A thorough history and physical revealed that she was not exercising as she used to do, and her eating was very chaotic with a full time job and toddler. We rearranged her scheduled, included a protein snack on the way to work at 6 a. m., added exercise in the early evening and a mild appetite suppressant. She lost her “baby fat” and feels great.
